Minutes

  • Mrs. Young shared about the community event provided last week of the showing "Sreenagers".  We had over 80 people show up.  As part of the event there was a discussion afterward regarding the individuals that attended.
  • Mrs. Young shared a little about the elementary report card and provided an example.  We have heard that parents are just as interested hearing about how their student is doing in Keys to Success like collaboration, communication, problem-solving, self-directed learning, and being a responsible citizen as they are in academics.
  • Mr. Hankins introduced Katy Gravin who shared about TIDE week
  • Teach, Inspire, Discover, Explore - This is a week that challenges 5th-grade students, gives an opportunity to engage in community and local activities, and provides new opportunities. Parents come to speak about their careers and there is a variety show. Delaware Area Career Center has student speakers come as well.

  • Construction Update - Mr. Doug Swartz

Minutes

  • Mr. Swartz shared that we are moving dirt as of today.  The construction company is currently stripping topsoil, trees have been cut and removed, and temporary drainage and roads are being started. He walked through samples that adminstration and the constuction manager would intend to provide on an ongoing basis to keep the board apprised on the change orders that have occurred, contingency dollars being spent, and the status of the project.
  • Mr Schneider asked how the contingency differed from the change order to be discussed later.
    • Mr. Swartz noted that the contingency is not a change in scope but something that occurs and is valid current scope but requires additional funds.

This is a meeting of the Board of Education in public for the purpose of conducting the School District's business and is not considered a public community meeting. This is a time for public participation during the meeting as indicated in the agenda. (Please reference criteria for Public Participation, which is attached to the agenda.)

  • Mr Singer shared that he has checked with the City of Columbus engineer and that be the end of 2024 it looks like there should be sewer at the Delaware County border.

11. Board Members Items of Interest

  • Ms. Julia Wood shared that State testing has been going on this week and ends on Tuesday. AAA is coming to BWHS Tuesday with a distracted driving simulator and to provide free maintenance checks during lunches. The Prom Promise assembly will be Thursday. Mr. Smith’s mother will be sharing a powerful message to students. Academic signing day is April 26 at 8:30 am. Seniors who have received an academic scholarship are invited to be recognized at a school-wide assembly, followed by a reception for them and their families. This will be the second year we have had academic signing day. The choir has states next Saturday morning, followed by prom in the evening. The theme is Enchanted Forest and ticket sales end tomorrow at midnight. BWHS honor court is invited to attend our Scholars Dinner, which is slated for May 1st. Mrs. O’reily will be speaking this year. Student council is hosting the second annual Police Officer Night of Appreciation May 2 at 6:30. Community members are welcome to join in honoring local officers. The presentation will be followed by a dinner for the officers and their families. The cabaret is May 5 at 2:00. It is a talent show with a couple of group acts which will preview next year’s shows. NHS will be having new member inductions later in the evening. Student Council will be visiting the middle school on May 6 to give advice to incoming freshmen about high school. The last athletic signing day for this year is Tuesday, May 7 at 2:45.
  • Mrs. Lee is excited that she is getting to speak at the academic signing. She shared that she enjoyed Mr. Buskirk's article in the Eagle-Examiner explaining how schools are funded.
  • Mrs. Meyer shared that the Mazzi Trail is being finalized. She mentioned that the  Board Leadership Institute (BLI) is coming up and that it has been really helpful to have attended.
  • Mr. Wecker took the opportunity to go to the MORPC presentation today and has seen that they have expanded their view on more rural and outlying areas.
  • Mr.  Schneider stated that with the new development and extention of developments it is going to put a major burden the South Columbus Street during school hours. Big Walnut Elementary will also feel the strain.
